About Gears
Gears is an open-source workspace for AI agents. It gives every agent working on a project the same structured information, the same tasks, and the same record, whether the agent is local, on a server, or in a web planner.
I am Darryn Nyberg. I have spent twenty years building software for Cisco, Cigna Health, the Department of War, and the Department of Labor, and I have run Nyberg Technology for the same period. Gears began as an internal tool we used on our own projects. We open-sourced it so others could use it.
The first version was a .gears directory of structured markdown. The second added a CLI so agents could stay on track and repeat work with the same skills and runs. Each of those versions lasted about a year.
Version 3 exists because agents needed to talk to one another. A web agent used for planning had to reach the development agents running locally or on a server. We removed the parts of version 2 that neither we nor our users were actually using, and we added the things everyone wanted: one place where every agent works from the same information.
Gears v3 is deliberately structured and opinionated. Agents perform better with clear structure, so we gave them one. The goal is that agents act the same way regardless of model or reasoning level.
The CLI is free and open source at github.com/Syluxso/gears-cli. The web interface is free; Runbooks (still under development) will be the paid option. You can also run Gears entirely locally without an account.
